Today when I got home from work, I decided I was going to try out Write or Die (Google it, I'm too sleepy for link-hunting right now).
I gave myself a goal of 1,000 words in 30 minutes. I wasn't exactly sure what would happen if I missed the goal, but I just clicked "Write" and started writing. I made the goal. I managed to write 1,044 words in 31 minutes (which was really 30 minutes and a few seconds, as I finished my sentence before I clicked "Done").
I was proud, but that's not the part that surprised me. The part that surprised me was what I wrote.
My main character gets pneumonia. While visiting one of her friends who is attending Yale. I did not plan for anyone to get ill, and yet as my fingers were flying over keys, there it was.
My main character, Emily, has nightmares that wake her up almost every night. One night, she wakes up, and initially I thought it was another dream, but as I wrote, I found myself typing that she woke up in a cold sweat, and when she turned her head the room spun and...blah, blah, blah pneumonia.
And I thought to myself, "Whoa...where did THAT come from?" And then I got to thinking about it in relation to the rest of my plot (lololol "plot"...wassat?) and it's pretty much perfect. And, as a writer, that is the best feeling in the world. When you don't have to really do anything but let the words flow and your story sort of...writes itself? I dunno, it's hard to explain, but anyone who writes will know what I'm talking about.
Anyway, that was the best thing about today. Second best thing was when I went to buy a pack of gum and realized I'd forgotten my checkcard, so my friend bought the gum for me. FREE HUBBA BUBBA! (Yes, kid's bubblegum. It sounded good. Don't judge me. I blew bubbles.)
